Most carmakers have been focusing on how to increase in-car connectivity. But, when it comes to charging technology, most manufacturers are still behind. However, Porsche has taken a step ahead and is setting the pace for electric car charging. The German automaker has unveiled its first fully electric sedan – the Porsche Taycan – and it has also announced a partnership with MEV Systems, which can transform any residential driveway into a quick-charging station. With this partnership, owners of new Taycan models will be able to charge their cars at home in as little as five minutes. Read on to know more about this partnership and how Porsche’s all-electric Taycan car has overtaken iconic cars in the charging department as well.
Porsche Taycan: A First of Its Kind
Porsche is known for its iconic sports cars and SUVs, but when it comes to battery-electric vehicles, the German automaker took a new route. No other automaker has ever been as bold as Porsche and its first all-electric car, the Porsche Taycan, was a game changer. The Taycan is the first fully-electric sedan in the world and the world’s first all-electric sports car. It’s also the world’s first production car with more than 500 horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. It’s also the first car to have a full-function, wireless charging pad that’s integrated seamlessly into the car’s center console. Essentially, this means that owners can charge their electric cars at home using the pad that’s integrated into the car.
Porsche Taycan Comes with Fast Charging Capability
The Taycan is an all-electric car with a range of over 250 kilometers. Unlike Tesla’s affordable Model 3, this is a high-end sports car for the masses. But the Taycan has something special in its arsenal – a charging capability that’s unparalleled in the electric car sector. The Taycan comes with a 100 kilowatt charging capability at a charging station. This means that the sedan’s battery can be topped up to 80% in less than 30 minutes. If you factor in the car’s charging speed — at a charging station with an electric power of 2 kilowatts per hour, the Taycan’s battery can be charged to 95% in just 15 minutes, which is an unrivalled feature.
Taycan and MEV Systems Will Work to Develop DC Supercharging Stations
Porsche’s partnership with MEV Systems will focus on developing DC supercharging stations. This is a rapid charging facility that can recharge a car’s battery in just five minutes, which is more than what’s available at most charging stations. The partnership between Porsche and MEV Systems will start with the development of the DC supercharging stations. This is expected to be completed by 2022. The idea is to establish a set of charging stations with a combined capacity of 12 megawatts in Europe. Porsche is also working on a “mobility plan” and it envisions that it will have a fully autonomous, all-electric car by the year 2022. This is something that no other carmaker has ever said and it makes sense as Tesla’s self-driving fleet is also all-electric.
Porsche Taycan’s Charging Time is Shorter than a Standard Electric Car’s
One thing that is undeniably impressive about the Porsche Taycan is that it can be fully charged in just one hour and 25 minutes. This is close to what a standard 1.5-liter vehicle takes to be fully charged. In fact, the charging time is shorter than any other electric car in the market. The only luxury car that can match the Porsche’s charging time is the Audi E-Tron, which takes two hours to be fully charged. All other EVs, including Tesla’s Model S and Model X, take more time to be charged. The charging time is not the only thing that’s going to be quick about the Porsche Taycan. This is also the first production car to come with wireless chargin capability. Essentially, this means that owners can charge their cars at home using the pad that’s integrated into the car.
